These deep purple blooms are on a Turpentine Broom plant. Rubbing the plant will leave your fingers covered with an oily compound which has a pungent citrus odor. The Kawaiisu and Western Shoshone believe that the plant has special powers to keep snakes away. It works. We didn't see a one!
